Gregory E. Somerhalder
Chief Risk Officer
As chief risk officer for CoBank, Greg Somerhalder provides leadership and guidance on all key risk areas of the bank, including credit risk, operational risk, asset/liability risk and market risk, and reputational risk. Mr. Somerhalder also serves on the Management Executive Committee, Asset/Liability Committee and Country Risk Committee and is a member of the bank’s Senior Leadership Team.
Mr. Somerhalder joined the CoBank leadership team as deputy chief risk officer upon the completion of the CoBank-U.S. AgBank merger. Prior to assuming this role, Mr. Somerhalder served as senior vice president of Risk Management of U.S. AgBank.
Mr. Somerhalder has more than 29 years of experience in the Farm Credit System. He began his banking career in 1982 as a loan representative trainee for CoBank at a predecessor entity, the Wichita Bank for Cooperatives, which became CoBank after a 1989 merger. Prior to joining U.S. AgBank, Mr. Somerhalder spent 19 years at CoBank, focusing primarily on the Rural Utility and Agribusiness sectors. In 2001, he joined AgBank as vice president of Correspondent Lending and continued to serve in positions of increasing responsibility over the next decade.
A native of Burlington, Oklahoma, Mr. Somerhalder was actively involved in farming in his community and was an employee of the local agricultural cooperative. He received a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics from Oklahoma State University. He is based in Denver, Colorado.
